Historic night for Achara pulls Rocks into BBL Cup Final
Sunday night saw a Super Sunday of Scottish Basketball take place in which Rocks and the fans in the Emirates arena were treated to a vintage Kieron Achara performance.
In what has been a pretty disappointing league campaign so far for the Glasgow Rocks in the BBL Championship, they sit 10th in the table with a 3-13 league record – something no one within the organisation is happy with. For all teams, the Cup and Trophy often provides refuge from the League, as ‘anything can happen in knockout basketball’ floats through everyone’s minds. For some, it provides them with the opportunity to turn things around and for other it can come as a form shock defeats as favourites drop out early.
For the Glasgow side, the BBL Cup has provided them with a break from the horrific BBL Championship and their good run of form in the knockout competition saw them reach the semi-finals in which they were drawn against Manchester Giants in a 2-leg tie. The Giants came into the tie on a 3 game loosing streak versus the Scottish side, something they’d look to turn around. Led by England international Calum Jones and the beastly Willie Clayton, scoring and rebounds were almost guaranteed for the Mancunians.
Holding an 8 point advantage after their 85-77 win down in the Trafford Sportsdome, Rocks came home to a hopeful crowd. Achara had a dominant performance down there too and was joined by Bouna Ndiaye who dropped 24 points in 24 minutes.
A historic performance, well documented by the BBL and its speakers, was graced onto the Emirates floor as Achara proved the difference as he posted 22 points on 7/10 shooting, along with 8 rebounds and 2 assists, Achara also shone as the defensive anchor as he had 3 steals and 2 monster blocks, one on Manchester big-man Clayton.
Achara spoke to the media post game,
I’m always feeling confident, just, tonight was the night. We’ve got a lot of scorers around and Ali [Fraser] was playing at a really, really high level, Gareth’s [Murray] been shooting the ball really well and now we’ve got Tadas and Bouna shooting the ball, we’ve got a really deep squad.
A humble quote from the man who has led his squad to yet another final. Achara’s performance led him to being selected for the BBL All-Star 5 Team of the Week.

Glasgow will take on league leaders London Lions in the BBL Cup Final in Arena Birmingham on the 27th January. Speaking ahead of the big game, Achara said,
“We’ve been here before, I think this is my 3rd final in five years or so, so right now it’s just about building on that, we’ll go back and start looking at game tape and start preparing. We’ve got to work on consistency, we have spells where we look like one of the best teams in the league and spells where we look like the worst.”
