Men’s and Women’s Cup draw brings chances of upset

Yesterday afternoon, Caledonia House, the Home of BasketballScotland¬†was host to the official draw of the Men’s and Women’s SBC Scottish Cup.¬† To draw the fixtures, Colin Gregor, Head of Operations, joined Graham Shaw, Head of Competitions.

Well, where do we start… there’s a few things to clear up regarding the draw as it could get confusing!

Edinburgh Uni Basketball

The Women’s fixture list was drawn first live yesterday afternoon. The Women’s SBC has a different structure with the Premiership and Division 1 almost playing within the same league. There must be a Preliminary game drawn as there is 9 teams entered into this seasons competition. Fair to say, my mouth watered when these teams were drawn, two of the best teams in Women’s Scottish Basketball, were drawn together in the very first round, meaning for one team, the usual long Cup run will be very short this year. Those teams were, Lady Rocks who would travel to St Mirren WCS. WOW.

Lady Rocks were runners up in last years competition and St Mirren finished top of the Division 1 table… what a fixture. P1 will be used to identify this fixture.

P1 Game is to be played on the weekend of the 29th September.

The rest of the Draw went as follows

West Lothian Wolves v City of Edinburgh Kool Kats

Sony Centre Fury v Glasgow University

Winner of P1 v Glasgow Fever

Polonia Phoenix v Edinburgh University

The local derbies are rife in this years draw, as Polonia play host to Edinburgh Uni, which is not only packed with ex Polonia players and visa versa, but they are literally “around the corner from each other”. The other local derby is the P1 game plus also their eventual opponents, resulting in an all West affair.

City of Edinburgh Basketball

The Men’s draw came shortly after, and featured a much bigger pool of fixtures. The 10 SBC Division 1 were all granted with a bye into the Round of 16 and the Division 2 and Non-League teams were drawn first.

Two Preliminary games were drawn from the Division 2 and Non-League pool and the rest were left for the Round of 16.

The first preliminary game drawn featured two teams that battled at the top of Division 2 last season, Ayrshire Tornadoes, who will play host to Perth Phoenix. The second preliminary game was drawn as Pleasance BC to host Portlethen Panthers.

This was followed by the remainder of the draw. The very first team drawn out of the hat (well the ball, but you get what I mean) was the Winner of P1 (Tornadoes or Phoenix) who would play host to one of the very few Non-League sides in the competition, Highland Bears. Mr Graham Shaw noted that this would be an exciting fixture as the 3 teams involved would be eager to reach the Quarter Finals of the Scottish Cup.

Playoff and Cup Winners from last season City of Edinburgh Kings will play host to Winners of P2 (Pleasance or Panthers).

Glasgow University will play host to last seasons Cup runners up Boroughmuir Blaze.

League Champions and Playoff runners up St Mirren WCS will host newly promoted side Edinburgh Lions.

Edinburgh University will host Dunfermline reign in an exciting all East contest.

The second Grampian team and one of the other Non-League teams in the competition, Granite City Grizzlies will host Division 2 side West Lothian Wolves.

Division 1 side Stirling Knights will play host to fellow Division 1 competition Glasgow Storm, a testing affair for all involved.

The final fixture drawn, will feature Heriot Watt hosting Division 1 giants Sony Centre Fury…yeah otherwise known as Falkirk Fury, maybe we’ll see an early upset there, who knows!

This concluded the 2018-19 SBC Scottish Cup draw.
